Hospital waste disposal

The management of hazardous substances requires knowledge of the relevant legal provisions, ministerial ordinances and various types of regulations. EMKA S. A. provides comprehensive collection, transport and disposal services of infectious and non-infectious materials from the activities of broadly understood health care facilities. We deal with neutralization of hazardous substances and preparations produced in hospitals , among which we can mention body parts and organs, blood bags and blood preservatives, surgical and treatment tools, chemicals and various medications.

Disposal of medical waste from hospitals takes place in our plant immediately after its collection from the indicated place. Collection and transport in a specialized vehicle adapted to this type of activity takes place on the days of the week designated by the schedule.

18 01 02 – Body parts and organs as well as blood bags and blood preservatives (except 18 01 03)

18 01 03 * – Other wastes that contain live pathogenic microorganisms or their toxins and other forms capable of transferring genetic material that are known or reasonably believed to cause human disease and animals (e.g. infected diaper pants, pads, pads), with the exception of 18 01 80 and 18 01 82, i.e. waste contaminated with blood, secretion containing pathogenic agents or containing blood in liquid form – contaminated vessels, dressings, gauze, used catheters , surgical and treatment tools, syringes, laboratory glassware, drip devices, medical spatulas.

18 01 01 – Surgical and treatment tools and their remnants (except 18 01 03), i.e. infusion systems, surgical knives, scalpels, scissors, scrapers, chisels,

Storage methods and duration

Properly adapted room – requirements in accordance with the Regulation of the Minister of Health of 30.07.2010 on the detailed handling of medical waste

18 01 03 *, 18 01 06, 18 01 08 *, 18 01 10 * – Storage at a temperature of 10 ° C to 18 ° C as long as the properties of the waste allow, but no longer than 72 hours. At temperatures below 10 ° C, the storage period may be up to 30 days.

18 01 02 * – Storage up to 10 ° C for up to 72 hours.

18 01 01, 18 01 04, 18 01 07, 18 01 09 – Storage as long as the properties of the waste permit, but no longer
than 30 days .

Waste packing method

Medical waste with codes 18 01 03; 18 01 04, except for waste with sharp ends and edges, are collected in disposable bags made of polyethylene foil, red, opaque, durable, resistant to moisture and chemicals, with the possibility of closing once

Medical waste with codes 18 01 06; 18 01 08, with the exception of waste with sharp ends and edges, collected in disposable bags made of polyethylene film, yellow, opaque, durable, resistant to moisture and chemicals, with the possibility of closing once

Waste with sharp ends and edges is collected in disposable containers, rigid, resistant to moisture, mechanically resistant to puncture or cutting.

Containers or bags should be filled to 2/3 of their volume in a way that enables their safe closure

Each container and bag should be properly marked in a visible place. The identification marking should include: the code of the waste stored therein, the address of residence or registered office of the waste producer, the date of closure.
